Creating Your Team
So you are ready to create a team! When creating a team you have the ability to choose the team name and mascot, as well as the team colors. Please note that when choosing teams, any name / mascot combinations that represent official colleges, universities or pro teams will be removed from the game without warning. You may however do variations of names. For example, naming your team the Kentucky Wildcats will get your team deleted. You could name your team however the UK Wildcats, the Kent Wildcats, the Kentucky Wilddogs, etc... No 2 teams can have the same name so you might have to be creative. It is preferred that you come up with names close to your area and unique mascots. Please try to keep all names realistic to the sports realm(Don't call your team the Michigan Beer Garden)
Once your team is created, you will now get to create the 6 players for your team(5 players and your fan base). You have a limited # of points to spend on your team, so disperse them wisely. Whether you want to go with a balanced team, focus your team around a star, or maybe a couple stars is entirely up to you. Don't underestimate the power of your 6th man the fan base. This raucous group of fans will not only give you a nice home court advantage, but they also will travel to follow you around, giving you the ability to neutralize other home court advantages, and also giving you an advantage at neutral site games(for example in tournaments). With player names, please try to keep these realistic and appropriate. If you make all 5 players the same name your team will get deleted. Player names should not include inappropriate language.
Creating Your Player
Each player gets their own first and last name, and then are graded in 14 attributes:
Speed - This is how fast and quick your player is, this helps all around the court
Strength - This will determine your players power, great for most players, rebounders, and scoring on fouls
Height - The height of your player
Weight - The weight of your player
Hands - Your player's ability to catch passes and dribble well
Vertical - Your players ups! Affects dunking and rebouding and block prevention
Composure - The better your composure the more likely your player will play well on the road or in the clutch
Awareness - The brains of your player, how intelligent they are on the court
Rebounding - Your players ability to get good position and crash the boards.
Blocking - Your players ability to block shots
Shooting - Your players ability to shoot the rock
Range - Better range means longer distance shot effectiveness. Post guys take jumpers too :)
Passing - Your players ability to pass and see pass opportunities
Stealing - Your players ability to steal the rock
Now disperse your points wisely. Once your team is created you will have the ability to shift these points around but only a little at a time so it is important that you get your team set up how you want!
Creating Your Fan Base
Your fan base is your 6th man! They are the die hard, never quit fighters that scream until the can't talk anymore! Before you think to tank the crowd and just focus on your players, know that the more fans that show up in your favor the more of a home court advantage you get at home or neutral court games, and the more you can neutralize a crowd at away games:
Travel - How well they travel on the road, allowing you to have a stronger presence at neutral games or even road games
Fair Weather Fan- How well your supported when your tam isnt doing well
Student Section - The Student Section affects your opponents composure
Taunting - Affects free throw shooting for your opponent
Excitement - Affects your momentum in games
Loyalty - Loyal fans will be loud and faithful regardless of the score...
Population - determines your sheer attendance
Upgrading Your Team
Now that your team is created, it is time to decide how you want to upgrade your team. As is your team can compete in as many exhibition games as you want. However if you want to play in any tournaments or be considered for the end of the month championship tournament then you have to upgrade your team to a club, franchise or dynasty.... Each level gives you slightly better perks, being a lower end doesn't at all stop you from winning championships or being the best team out there, but at the same time every bit helps...
You can also purchase booster packs to add bonus points to your teams list. The booster packs are a bit pricey, but this is on purpose to deter coaches from buying a bazillion booster packs to blow up their team. However if you feel you just need a little extra punch, then a booster pack or two is the way to go...
Exhibition Games and Challenges
Once your team is ready to go you can now start sending and receiving challenges for regular games. To challenge an opponent simply find the team page of the opponent you want to play and click on the challenge me link in the middle of the team page. This will issue a challenge to your opponent, which they can accept or reject. Home / Away is determined by the system, generally the team with the fewest home games will receive the home game, in a tie it is randomly determined.....
You can only schedule one game per hour, but there is 24 hours in a day so plenty of time to get lots of games scheduled..
You can check any challenges you have received by clicking the Challenges link under the My Account menu on the left hand side. Here you will view any challenges received and be able to accept or reject them..... Once a game is scheduled it cannot be cancelled.
Team Strategies
On the right hand side under each team is a strategies link. This will allow you to set the default strategies for your team for all games played. By looking at upcoming games, you will have the chance to tweak these strategies specifically for that game. Here are the strategy changes you can make:
Team Pace - This dictates how fast or slowly your team pushes the ball up the court and runs the offense. Higher paced teams try to run and gun and take quick shots, while slower paced teams try to keep the score low and run the shot clock down
Press - Teams that press have a higher chance of getting turnovers but at the risk of giving up fast breaks. Good passing teams will equalize a team that presses with speed and good steal abilities
Defensive Aggression - The higher your defensive aggression the more you will attempt to gather steals and turnovers, however you are also more likely to commit fouls. Your awareness and steal abilities can swing this both ways
Defensive Matchups - You can determine how you want your players to match up against an opponents. In the Team Strategies section this will be based on position(PG against SG etc), however if you go to a particular game's matchup strategy, you can set them specifically on the player.
Late Game Strategies - This determines when you want to foul, or shoot 3s versus 2s.
Defensive Scenarios - Here you choose which defenses you would like to run for particular scenarios in a game. These again can be tweaked for specific games by visiting a particular Game's matchup screen.
Offensive Tendancies - Instead of choosing particular offensive sets, in SimSportsBasketball, you can choose your offensive tendancies. These will dictate how your offense runs by determining how frequently you want to incorporate these tendancies into your offense. Tweaking this to get the ideal results might take time, and once you figure it out you may not want to reveal your settings ;)
Player Specific Strategies
In addition to your team's strats, you can set player specific controls for each player, keep in mind these are instructions for your players, your players awareness and composure may affect their ability told:
Shooting - This will choose how open your player needs to be in order to shoot, the lower it is, the more risky shots he will take, the higher it is the more likely he is to pass on an ok shot to try and get a better one.
Distance Shooting - This will affect how willing a player is to shoot from distance. For guards this means 3s, for post guys this can mean 3s or 2s.
Driving - How often your player is expected to drive to the hoop.
Post Up - How often your player is expected to post up(can be guards as well)
Clutch - This determines how badly your player wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line, higher clutch means he is more likely to receive the ball, lower clutch means the team wont look at him, unless there is no other choice.
Defenses
Here are your choices for defenses:
Man to Man - Standard man to man defense, The defense will stay with their man no matter what.
Matchup Zone - Works like a man to man however the team will freely switch through picks and screens
2-3 Zone - Works best against the interior, can give up open 3s, especially if your team is slower
3-2 Zone - Good peremeter defense, works poorest against post guys with range that can hit jumpers from the free throw line
1-3-1 Trap - Trapping defense, that can lead to more steals, but gives up alot of base line jumpers. Passing teams will eat this up.
